In 2001 two Ole Miss Alumni came together to create the first ever Crescent City SEC Kickoff Party. Sharon Courtney and Kathan Dearman along with help from fellow Ole Miss alumni, organized and held the party at Ernst Cafe. Ernst Cafe was a great choice because of the owner's own SEC affiliation and her generous arrangement to hold the party for no cost to the group. Since then the party has grown in popularity and size. So much so that the 2005 Crescent City SEC Kickoff Party was be held in the larger House of Blues main auditorium. The Crescent City SEC Kickoff Party first consisted of just a group of volunteers. In 2005 the group gained non-profit status with the state of Louisiana. In 2004, the organization gave $500 to a local charity, "For the Children." "For the Children" serves 650 students at three of New Orleans' lowest-performing public schools. "For the Children" promotes reading and math skills by providing tutoring and age-appropriate literature and workbooks for young readers. In 2005, the Crescent City SEC Kickoff Party Inc. donated a portion of the proceeds to a local public school, McDonough 35 located on 1331 Kerlerec Street. The donation purchased reference materials for their library. In 2006, the Crescent City SEC Kickoff partnered with the New Orleans Recreation Department, NORD, so that proceeds will benefit athletics throughout the city. In 2009, the Crescent City SEC Kickoff changed their partnership to benefit the Sports4Kids Foundation. In 2010, the Crescent City SEC Kickoff sponsored PlayWorks, New Orleans. |
